John W. Gallivan Plaza Ice Rink and Support Facilities

John W. Gallivan Plaza Ice Rink and Support Facility
Architect:
EDA Architects, Inc., Salt Lake City
General Contractor:
Big-D Construction, Salt Lake City
Project Location:

Located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake, the Gallivan Center includes an urban plaza, amphitheatre, and conference center, all of which were renovated to better accommodate new and increased uses. This work included the expansion and redesign of the amphitheatre, the relocation and expansion of the outdoor skating rink, new landscaping, and the development of a new two-story conference and special events building, which also provides permanent restrooms for concertgoers, concessions and operational support for the ice rink. The conference and events building is located at the northern edge of the Gallivan Center, creating a sound buffer, a reinforced and engaging street wall along 200 South, and a unique viewing platform for the Center’s ice rink and concerts. Clad in copper siding, the upper floor of the events building is designed to host various public and private functions, while providing 360-degree views of downtown. Sheltering
the ice rink is a fabric and steel armature, which offers year-round sun protection while accommodating lighting and sound equipment.
