University of Utah Shoreline Ridge Parking Structure

This aesthetically-pleasing six-level concrete structure just south of the University of Utah Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Institute complements existing campus buildings and can accommodate more than 900 visitors. The $18.4 million project was built on an existing slope with a grade change of approximately 80 feet from one end to the other. In order to accommodate the slope, the team removed 85,000 cubic yards of material and stabilized the exterior.
Crews utilized an innovative cable system for piling and shoring, rather than soil nail construction. It required drilling only a portion of the distance to install soil nails, eliminating the possibility of hitting utility lines. The use of a “flat plate” structure eliminated the need for exposed beams, making the interior feel more spacious and maximizing space. The contractor designed an architectural cast-in-place wall for the most visible side of the structure for a more pleasing aesthetic without compromising the budget.
